POKOTABI / Coppie
COPPIE[こぴゑ]
In Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, Coppie pairs seasonal dishes and charcoal grilling with an adventurous selection of wine, sake, and house-crafted beverages.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked along Inokuma-dori Takatsuji in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward, Coppie is a modern izakaya-style restaurant that moves effortlessly past the boundaries of Japanese, Western, and Chinese cooking. Set inside a renovated traditional townhouse, the understated dining room welcomes guests with an omakase course highlighting the flavors of the season.
A major draw of the cooking lies in pairing unexpected ingredients with the careful heat of the charcoal grill. Offerings range from chicken wings stuffed with Italian salsiccia to aromatic cuts of grilled meat, each balancing savory juices with smoky depth. Inventive creations—such as spring rolls filled with cod milt (kumo-ko) and kumquat, or warm capellini in dashi accented with citrus—use fruit acidity and rich broth to bring a lively rhythm to the meal.
Choosing the right pour to match these layered dishes is an essential part of the evening. Beyond a well-curated cellar of wines and sake pairings, the drink list features craft cocktails such as a gin and tonic accented with green Japanese sansho pepper and a house spiced ginger sour. Intricate house-made mocktails blending fruit, tea leaves, and spices ensure that guests who prefer not to drink alcohol can still enjoy a seamless pairing experience.
Seating includes counter spots with an open view of the kitchen in motion, as well as comfortable table seating. Because the meal is designed to be savored at an unhurried pace—often with explanations of the background behind each dish and ingredient—reserving ahead for dinner and allowing plenty of time is recommended.
